“A toast!” (Apr. 2022)

Ah… this one. After doing that “Pray, Scat!” test from the year 2021, I decided to try my hands on animating Marilyn again but with something a bit more challenging. This was an acting/dialogue piece I wanted to try out and it took 1-2 months to animate. It was fun to key and pose out, but a MONSTER to inbetween and breakdown.
Audio comes from here (a scene from “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”): https://youtu.be/5N9_el2Wzms?si=AsDC9TvfWNH1R5d8

Btw, me sharing these might be in a inconsistent order. Sometimes I might share some recent stuff, and other times I’ll share some animation from like… 1-2 years ago. But these will be in a playlist in chronological order so you’ll see the progress of how much I improved on my animation.

Personal critique: This one is rough to look at after a year later. Not only is it very rough in the line work, but I think the reason why I said it was a monster to inbetween and breakdown was because I feel like it’s so over-posed. I was also trying to learn how to use spacing charts (I know they’re called timing charts, but spacing charts makes more sense to me), but the over-posing part was also the problem. Movements in the first half are very jerky without time to ease or settle, and then when it’s suddenly smooth in the second half, it’s kind of jarring. Also, despite doing thumbnails for this (will share in another video), I didn’t have a consistent design here (model sheets can be very important sometimes). I feel like I should’ve had time to take care of the design just as much as the animation. But there are some ideas here that I did like. One example is the bit at the end of Marilyn raising her eyebrows is an interesting acting bit.

Definitely something I’m not too proud of, but it’s one I do like sharing when it comes to how I was learning with animation.
