SCRIPT: Canadian teenager Jackson Goldstone tamed the demanding ‘Black Snake’ course at Val di Sole Trentino in Italy to win his first ever Men Elite UCI Mountain Bike Downhill ahead of compatriot Finn Iles.

Goldstone (Santa Cruz Syndicate) produced a spectacular crowd-pleasing ride in a time of 3:34.926, more than two seconds quicker than fellow Canadian Iles (Specialized Gravity) with Frenchman Thibaut Dapréla (Commencal/Muc-Off by Riding Addiction) taking third.

“I was on the edge the whole time,” said Goldstone after winning on a course that presented plenty of problems and crashes for other riders in the third event of the season.

The women’s events brought the best out of Austrian riders. In the Women Elite UCI Mountain Bike Downhill World Cup Valentina Höll (Rockshox Trek Race Team) coped best with the conditions to repeat her victory in round two in her home country earlier this month.

“I feel like it was always in me,” said Höll “I just needed to find the right headspace and just put it together and find my mojo. She closes the gap on Swiss rankings leader Camille Balanche (Dorval AM Commencal) who was second with New Zealander Jess Blewitt third. (GT-Continental Factory racing).

Laura Stigger had started Austrian celebrations on Friday in the Elite Women UCI Cross-country Short Track World Cup. Stigger beat Puck Pieterse of the Netherlands (Alpecin-Deceuninck) after an intense sprint finish. Rankings leader Pauline Ferrand Prevot of France (Ineos Grenadiers) was third.

Meanwhile Luca Schwarzbauer (Canyon CLLCTV) extended his lead in the Elite Men’s UCI Cross-country Short Track series. The German stormed to an emphatic victory by over two seconds. South Africa’s Alan Hatherly (Cannondale Factory Racing) was second with Frenchman Joshua Dubau (Rockrider Ford Racing Team) third.

On Sunday the UCI Cross-Country Olympic World Cup races take place at Val di Sole.

The Mountain Bike World Series resumes in Pal Arinsal in Andorra (24-27 August) after the UCI World Championships in Glasgow (3-13 August).
