Introit
He shall call upon me, and I will hearken to him; I will deliver him,

and bring him to honour: with length of days will I satisfy him. Who-
so dwelleth under the defence of the Most High: shall abide under the

shadow of the Almighty.
Hymn 103, A mighty fortress is our God
† In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Let us pray.
Almighty God,
to whom all hearts are open,
all desires known,
and from whom no secrets are hidden:
cleanse the thoughts of our hearts
by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit
that we may perfectly love you,
and worthily magnify your holy name,
through Christ our Lord. Amen.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the
Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all
your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great
and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your
neighbour as yourself.
Silence is kept
Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God’s
forgiveness.
Merciful God, our maker and our judge,
we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,
and in what we have failed to do:
we have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves;
we repent, and are sorry for all our sins.
Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in
newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
† Almighty God who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to
him in faith; pardon you and set you free from all your sins,
strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Holy God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal,
Have mercy on us.
Let us pray.
Silence is kept

The Collect
God of the new and eternal covenant, as the forty days of the great
flood swept away the world’s corruption and watered new
beginnings of righteousness and life: grant to us, who are washed
clean and born again in the saving blood of baptism, the wellspring of
your grace, that your gift of new life may flourish once again; through
Jesus Christ our Redeemer, who lives and reigns with you in the
unity of the Holy Spirit, on God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD

First Reading: Genesis 9:8-17
Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him, ‘As for me, I am
establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you,
and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the
domestic animals, and every animal of the earth with you, as many as
came out of the ark. I establish my covenant with you, that never
again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never
again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.’ God said, ‘This is
the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every
living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set
my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between
me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is
seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant that is between me
and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall
never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. When the bow is in
the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant
between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the
earth.’ God said to Noah, ‘This is the sign of the covenant that I have
established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.’
For the Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God!

The Psalm: 25:1-10

R: To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.

To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul; O my God, in you I trust
let me not be put to shame; let not my enemies triumph over me.
Let none who look to you be put to shame,
but let the treacherous be shamed and frustrated.

R.
Make me to know your ways, O Lord, and teach me your paths.
Lead me in your truth and teach me,
for you are the God of my salvation;
for you have I hoped all the day long.

R.

Remember, Lord, your compassion and love,
for they are from everlasting.
Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions,
but think on me in your goodness, O Lord, according to your
steadfast love.

R.

Gracious and upright is the Lord;
therefore shall he teach sinners the in the way.
He will guide the humble in doing right and teach his way to the
lowly.
All the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth to those who keep
his covenant and his testimonies.

R.

For your name’s sake, O Lord,
be merciful to my sin, for it is great.
Who are those who fear the Lord?
Them will he teach in the way that they should choose.

R.

Second Reading: 1 Peter 3:18-22
For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the
unrighteous, in order to bring you to God. He was put to death in the
flesh, but made alive in the spirit, in which also he went and made a
proclamation to the spirits in prison, who in former times did not
obey, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, during the
building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight people, were saved
through water. And baptism, which this prefigured, now saves you—
not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for a
good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has
gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels,
authorities, and powers made subject to him.
For the Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God!
Gradual Antiphon
He shall give his Angels charge over thee: to keep thee in all thy ways.
They shall bear thee in their hands: that though hurt not thy foot
against a stone.
Gradual Hymn 591, Forty days and forty nights
Tract
Who-so dwelleth under the defence of the Most High: shall abide
under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say unto the Lord, Thou art
my hope and my stronghold: My God, in him I will trust. For he shall
deliver thee rom the snare of the hunter: and from the noisesome
pestilence. He shall defend thee under his wings: and thou shalt be
safe under his feathers. His faithfulness and truth shall be thy shield

and buckler: thou shalt not be afraid for any terror by night. Nor for
the arrow that flieth by day; for the pestilence that walketh in
darkness: nor for the sickness that destroyeth in the noon day. A
thousand shall fall beside thee, and ten thousand at thy right hand:
but it shall not come nigh thee: For he shall give his Angels charge
over thee: to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee in their
hands: that thou hurt not thy foot against a stone. Thou shalt go upon
the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou tread
under thy feet. Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I
deliver him: I will set him up, because he hath known my Name. He
shall call upon me, and I will hear him: yea, I am with him in trouble.
I will deliver him, and bring him to honour: with long life will I satisfy
him, and show him my salvation.
Please stand for the reading of the Gospel, as a sign of turning to God.
We cross our foreheads, lips, and hearts, praying that the Word of God
will pierce our minds, lips and hearts.
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Hear the Good News of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark.
† Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ.
The Gospel Mark 1:9-15
In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized
by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water,
he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove
on him. And a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my Son, the Beloved;
with you I am well pleased.’
And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. He
was in the wilderness for forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was
with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him.

Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the
good news of God, and saying, ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom
of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.’
For the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
was incarnate from the Holy Spirit We here bow our heads
and the Virgin Mary at the miracle of God becoming
and became truly human. human for our salvation.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge

the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son
is worshipped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
