For this music video, I wanted to focus on the general mood this song evokes in it’s listener, which is that of a “Summer Love”. All of the footage used was taken during the summer time. I wanted to show through my work the different types and shades of summers people encounter, and how these differences still leave an invoking since of summer within us all. This contrasted with the songs use of a SSVC form; made the footage have an appealing and distinct visual throughout the piece. However, this form also allowed for the footage to have a smooth flow and protrayed my earlier sentiments of contrasting summers still generating the same summer appeal.

As you will be able to see through my video I took a more loose approach to the complementary narrative in story telling. The song itself, “Summer Love”, is a first-person nonsense lyrical work that tells a love story between the singer and their romantic interest. Due to the nature of the openess of this work I decided to accompany it with my own interpretation and sought to feature some relations to the lyrics. This can explicity be seen in time stamp 0:34, where the lyrics “Take a walk around the beach.” are accompanied with a shot of a beach I visted while in Maine. Other shots are more symbolic, which is shown in 0:42-44 when the lyrics mentions “Don’t you be scared.” (a shot of a waterfall rolling down a cliff). “I’ll hold your hand” (a shot of my signifacnt other looking over a lake in Missouri). This video is riddled with many symbolic meanings to me as the footage used is personal to me and due to the fact I have always had a strong love for the summer myself.

I utilized alot of jumpcuts in my work, as noted by my use of cutting with the beat, and refrained from using any non-diegetic sound. I wanted the music to be the lasting sound in your mind, like that of a nostalgic memory as one watched the music video, to hopefully invoke an emotion of a firsthand experience with the footage presented. Along the lines of nostalgia, I also wanted the lighting to reflect that summer aura by having a clear brightnesses and varying strong hues of blue, yellow, orange, and green background colors. I wanted the video to rely heavily on these hues, as they are a staple in what many consider the summertime spectrum of colors, and are tied very heavily to rebirth and life. My main point for this work was to leave it as raw and open as I could to engage audiences and to pull forth memories of their own summer to the front. In a way, this vidoe is my own love song to summer, and all the wonderful experiences the season has given me.
