Ask Me Anything – What’s in a Name?

Ask Me Anything – What’s in a Name?

April 20, 2023

The Canadian Association of Petroleum Land Administration was founded almost three decades ago. At that time, CAPLA’s name accurately reflected the composition of our membership. As the energy sector and world commerce continue to evolve, shifts driven by technological tools, cost concerns, and more recently, the pandemic, change the way that many of us do our work.

The CAPLA Board of Directors sees that it is vital to explore how we can best support and expand our membership in this changing environment. Part of our success relies on the clear identification of our association, reflecting who we are today and who we will be in the future.

Join CAPLA’s President, Randon Slaney, and Deb Watson, Executive Director in this virtual session who will discuss this important milestone in CAPLA’s history and answer any questions you may have.

A message from the Board:

As you know, our industry and the business world more generally continue to evolve. Shifts driven by technological tools, cost concerns, and more recently the pandemic have changed the way that many of us do our work. For example, members are being asked to do more with less, take on massive digitization projects, or increasingly be able to provide relevant data at a moment’s notice to other colleagues in their companies. There are also new and emerging areas of work for the energy industry at large, including LNG, carbon capture, hydrogen capture, and renewable energy generation to name just a few.

For CAPLA itself, we need to reckon that the jobs of many of our members have changed in some of these ways. We also see ahead that we have a relatively senior membership, a portion of those who will be retiring in the coming years, as well as the lingering effects on our membership numbers from the most recent downturn in the oil and gas industry.

Finally, we note the moves and re-branding efforts that many other companies and industry associations have made in recent years, at least partially driven by some of these changes.

To match the current environment and planning for the years ahead, we believe that it is vital to explore how we can best support our membership in the years ahead and even expand our membership base to ensure our long-term viability. Accordingly, we view this task force as a first step to exploring our options and gathering the views of our members to ensure that anything we do will be done in a manner that reflects who we are and who we want to be going forward. Given some of the feedback we have received as of late from members, potential sponsors, and other stakeholders, an outcome of this initiative could be a name change for CAPLA, for example, to update the arguably outdated “administration” that has come up several times.

Of course, we value all feedback, whether positive or negative, around this initiative! We want to hear from you and discuss further how we can all move forward together, as it is our goal to make sure that any changes we make to CAPLA are done in the best interest of the current and future membership.
