Once upon a time, the Perennial process testing story…
After traveling through winter sunrise hours, on winding roads of dreamy landscapes, expansive multi colored skies, engulfing trees, and vasts farmlands, I arrived at the contrasting environment of what can only be described as Stanley Kubrick‘s next futuristic space odyssey set. The destination: the best rotomolding shop in the nation to test the techniques we’ll implement for the customization of each unique Perennial.
I spent two days in that surreal environment, testing and figuring out the details for the soon to come official first production run.
Take a look at how 100% recycled,
discarded, wasted, plastic metamorphoses into it’s brand new incarnation as a sustainable art piece. I first design and hand-painted the mold, a tedious process where the mold needs to be kept at a certain temperature, being heated by a massive growling flame torch. After that work gets completed, the mold gets hauled and locked down like Tutankhamun to be slowly introduced into a massive oven,
one that ominously opens its doors as if enchanting you into its lair. As it rotates, rocks, and rolls, moving like a roller coaster would in a universal studios ride, it comes out a few minutes later via the opening of those doors as if giving birth to cool off.
